TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team dropped their first Mid-American Conference game of the year against the University of Toledo, 64-48, tonight, Jan. 5, at the inside the Savage Arena.
The Eagles (3-5, 0-1 MAC) were led offensively by senior redshirt Danielle Rainey (Washington, DC-Vista Ridge (Florida)) with 16 points when she made 4 of 11 (0.364) shots from depth. Classmate Arena combs (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma-Putnam City West (State of Oklahoma)) added 13 points and the team’s four best assists.
On the defensive, second year redshirt Ce’Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Florida International)) grabbed six rebounds, had two interceptions and recorded a block. Meanwhile, freshman Lachelle Austin (Redford Memorial, Michigan-Wayne) also got six rebounds while his classmate Zaniya Nelson (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West) carried two boards and crushed a Rockets shot.
How did it happen
The first quarter saw EMU take a 9-3 lead to which the Rockets responded with a few buckets. Senior Courtnie lewis (Belton, Missouri-Belton) was solid, producing five runs in the opening stanza as the Eagles led 18-15 after one. The Greens and Whites were limited to just six points in the second quarter as UT ended the period 16-2 to take a 33-24 lead before halftime.
Toledo’s advantage grew to 15 points, 39-24, with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Eastern’s offense heated up with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit several minutes later. As the Eagles trailed in double digits, Rainey knocked down a pair of threes to bring the Eagles back within striking distance, 51-44, with just over five minutes to go. The Rockets finished strong, however, hitting five of their last six shots for the win, 64-48.
With two interceptions against the Rockets, Combs has recorded seven multi-swipe performances so far this season.
Skanes also had two interceptions, tying his career high.
Combs paced the Eagles with four assists, his sixth game this season with at least three dimes.
Four Eagles had five or more rebounds: Skanes (6), Austin (6), Combs (5), Rainey (5).
Combs has now recorded double-digit scoring efforts in 50 of his 52 career games with the Greens and Whites (96.2%).
With four marks of depth tonight, Rainey now has four performances with four or more trey balls while donning green and white.
Skanes crushed a shot against UT, his sixth game of the 2021-22 campaign with at least one dismissal.
Nelson recorded the first block of his career.
The Rockets lead the overall standings 53-35, however, EMU has won three of the last five meetings.
