NEO Cancels 76th Annual NEO High School Basketball Tournament
Miami, Okla. January 13, 2022 – For the past 75 years, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) has held an annual high school basketball tournament in January, one of the premier recruiting events of the year. Each year, thousands of athletes, families and fans came out to cheer on their favorite players and teams. The tournament’s popularity and high level of attendance led the NEO administration to make the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming event, originally scheduled for January 20-22.
“I believe it is in the best interests of our faculty, staff, students and potential guests due to the emergence of the new Omicron variant, the increase in COVID cases and large in-person crowds drawn to this highly anticipated event, to cancel the tournament for this year,” NEO President Dr. Kyle Stafford said. “I want to do my best to keep as many people safe as possible. and continue to be able to serve our student body.”
NEO will still host low-traffic activities, while continuing to monitor the ongoing evolution of COVID-19 and adhere to CDC guidelines.
